“The three big ones in life are wealth, health, and happiness. We pursue them in that order, but their importance is reverse.” – Naval Ravikant
The most important carving on your tombstone is the dash—the space between the numbers. How you choose to spend your time determines the quality of your life.
In the book, Live a Thousand Years, the author talks about how to get 10x out of your life. Most people measure time by clocks or calendars; think of the distance of the “dash.” Live a Thousand Years talks about the power of measuring your time and success by moments and experiences; think depth of the dash.
Picture one of your wonderful childhood memories. How long did that last? Did you even notice the time spent? Time is relative. Experiences are the gift that keeps on giving—a perpetual return on investment.
When I think back, I don’t think of the nice bike I had; I think of who I was riding with. I don’t think of the three-wheeler I had; I think of who was riding with me in the woods. I think of my dog, Oliver, who would follow me everywhere. I don’t think of the fish we caught; I think of the time I spent with my dad.
If you are reading this, you aren’t dead yet. When you look back on today years from now, what will you remember? How will you spend your dash?
Book the trip. Read the book. Take the class. Call your friend. Pet the dog.
Live.
On the lighter side, I have been misty-eyed for two weeks. Elliott leaves for USC on Sunday. I have been thinking of my “dash” with him and the dash I shared with my dad. I would play checkers with my dad, who was also named Elliott. We had a checker set that was bottle caps. One side was Pepsi, and the other side was Coke. My dad would kick my butt in checkers. Elliott still kicks my butt in chess. I have been losing board games to guys named Elliott my whole life. It has been wonderful.
I hope all is well with you and your family,
Jeremy
