Government Shutdown - What It Means for Your Retirement

Government Shutdown – What It Means for Your Retirement

Government Shutdown
Jeremy Finger, Founder

“Storms don’t last forever—but the boat you ride needs to be seaworthy.”

We have been down this road before, remember?

The headlines are everywhere: The government has shut down. Nearly 800,000 workers are furloughed or working without pay, programs like WIC may run out of funding, and the White House estimates the economy could lose $15 billion a week if this drags on.

News is DESIGNED to raise fear. If it bleeds, it leads. Don’t let the talking heads raise your emotions to the point of causing you to take drastic action.

A financial plan is DESIGNED to withstand volatility. No, it does not mean that you will never see a down month, but it does mean you can still achieve your goals.

Don’t believe me? You are here right now reading this. You have lived and survived through 9/11, the Global Financial Crisis, and the Pandemic. And here you still are.

Storms and showers are unavoidable. Life happens. Be flexible. Think long term.

Think of it like a boat. A storm may make the water choppy, but if you’ve got a solid vessel—with emergency cash reserves, diversification, and a long-term plan—you can ride it out.

Here are five things to remember in shutdown season:

Real financial planning for real life.

Riverbend is a fee-only, fiduciary advisor. Our plans are personal, shaped by your values and designed to help you build a full life.

Who We Are
  1. Check your cash cushion. Having 3–6 months of expenses in reserve is your first line of defense.

  2. Don’t panic sell. Market swings are normal. Stay disciplined.

  3. Think long-term. Shutdowns end. Markets recover.

Shutdowns, elections, pandemics, recessions—they all come and GO.
Lesson: A good financial plan isn’t built to avoid storms—it’s built to carry you through them.
