Learning Can Be Fun In Retirement – Finger Financial Five #74

FFF 74

“Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young. The greatest thing in life is to keep your mind young.” – Henry Ford

When you retire, you may enjoy a life of leisure.  This may be fine for a while. Then you may start to feel restless and in need of mental stimulation. Learning is to the mind what exercise is to the body. Fortunately, learning in retirement has never been easier.

Let me share with you a story…

My dad bought a desktop computer in the early 1980s. It was a big white Epson (I think) with a green font screen.  He would take me on his 50-mile trips to Myrtle Beach for a course in “the new personal computer.”

He was in his 70s at the time. Until he passed away in 2001, his mind was sharp. He never stopped learning.

You don’t have to drive 50 miles anymore. There are Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). These courses include lecture videos, reading material, assignments, and tests — all without leaving your home. Some of the most popular MOOCs are:

You can choose from thousands of courses on virtually any topic. The cost ranges from free to a few hundred dollars.

Retiring Happy is not only about finances. It is also about living your best life. That can include learning, travel and spending time alone or with family…

What is your best life? Are you living it? If not, why not?

On the lighter side, my wife and I went to Charleston for the day on Saturday. She walked the shops downtown, while I visited a childhood friend in Mt. Pleasant. Drove by my old apartment. I swear it was yesterday when I moved in 1992 and a lifetime ago when I moved out in 1995.

Hope all is well with you and your family,

Jeremy
