Sometimes the Answer Is Right in Front of You With Your Finances

Sometimes the Answer Is Right in Front of You

The other day, my wife Iren brought home salads for dinner.

Both containers were sitting on the kitchen counter. They looked identical — same greens, same toppings, same clear plastic lids.

So I asked her, “Which one is mine?”

She said, “The one with your name on it.”

Sure enough, my name was written right there on the lid. I’d been so focused on examining the salad through the plastic that I completely missed the obvious answer staring back at me.

It was a small moment. But it stuck with me.

Because I see people do this all the time with their finances.

We Focus on the Wrong Things

I’ve sat with people who can tell me exactly what their portfolio returned last quarter. They know their expense ratios down to the basis point. They track every dividend.

But when I ask how much income they’ll need in retirement, they’re not sure. When I ask about their tax strategy, they haven’t thought about it. When I ask whether they’ve coordinated Social Security timing with their spouse, there’s no plan.

They’re staring at the salad. They’re missing the name on the lid.

The Details That Actually Matter

Here’s what I’ve learned after nearly 30 years of doing this.

The things that move the needle aren’t usually the things people obsess over.

Picking the “best” mutual fund? That matters less than you think. The difference between a good fund and a great fund might be a fraction of a percent.

But a smart tax strategy versus no strategy? That can be hundreds of thousands of dollars. Social Security timing? Six figures. A real withdrawal plan versus pulling money randomly? That affects how long your money lasts.

These are the names on the lid. And too many people miss them because they’re focused on something else.

But Here’s the Real Point

After I found my salad, Iren and I sat down and ate dinner together.

And that’s when it hit me. I was so caught up in figuring out which salad was mine that I almost missed the point entirely.

It doesn’t really matter which salad you get. What matters is who you’re eating it with.

The same is true in retirement.

People spend years optimizing their portfolios. They stress over returns and fees and asset allocation. They watch the market like it’s a scoreboard.

Who We Are

But the scoreboard isn’t the game.

The game is your life. It’s who you spend time with. It’s what you do with your days. It’s the dinners with your spouse, the rounds of golf with friends, the trips to see grandkids, the mornings with nothing on the calendar but whatever you feel like doing.

Money is a tool. It gives you options. But it’s not the point.

What Should You Actually Focus On?

If I had to boil it down:

Your time. How are you spending it? Are you doing things that matter to you?

Your relationships. Who are you sharing your life with? Are you investing in those connections?

Your health. Can you actually enjoy what you’ve built?

And yes, your plan. Income. Taxes. Withdrawal strategy. Risk. The things that let everything else work.

Get the financial details right so you don’t have to think about them. Then focus on what actually matters.

The Bottom Line

Next time you find yourself fixated on something — the market, a rate of return, the news — take a step back.

Are you staring at the salad? Or are you looking at the lid?

And more importantly, are you remembering who you’re eating it with?
