“Thousands of engineers can design bridges, calculate the strains and stresses, and draw up specifications for machines, but the great engineer is the man who can tell whether the bridge or the machine should be built at all, where it should be built, and when.” – Eugene Grace
My triathlon coach talks about RPE, Relative Perceived Effort. It is the effort you feel like you are exerting on a scale of 1-10. Most of the time, my training is 3-5 and sometimes 5-7. 3-5 does not seem like much, but over time it adds up. Slow and steady wins the race, right? That is how the tortoise overcame the hare.
When it comes to saving for retirement, starting early is the best way. Starting now, is the second best way. See the chart below:
We can all look back and shoulda, woulda, coulda, but we can’t do anything about the past. We can only take our next best step to create our future. But Jeremy, what if I am starting late? Forward thinking and looking back. What does that mean? Fast forward 5 years and look back on today. What do you wish you would have done? Do that. Start today. Even if you start with your own RPE 3-5 and it doesn’t feel like much, it DOES make a difference.
Many people start out way too hard and burn themselves out. You don’t need to win the lottery or save an enormous amount per year. Think RPE 8-10. Little hardly felt changes over time, can get you there. When you look back on today, you will be glad you started.

On the lighter side, as you read this, I will be in Bulgaria with my wife and her family. Elliott will be helping his cousins teach tennis lessons. I will be reading, planning, training, and resting. Our RPE won’t get above 5 this trip. 😊
Hope all is well with you and your family,
