How To Prepare For Bear Markets – Finger Financial Five #64

“Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself.” – Rumi

Winter in the south can be four seasons in one day.

We played golf Sunday January 9th and some of us were in shorts.  As it got hotter throughout the day, we took off some layers. We were flexible and prepared.

Investing is the same way.  Prepare for all kinds of weather. It won’t always be 68 degrees and no wind.

With the potential of higher inflation, many expect interest rates to rise in 2022.  Higher rates are designed to slow inflation, but may also slow the economy. What does that mean to investors? There could potentially be increased volatility in the financial markets.

Like many great works of art and philosophy, good investing advice is timeless.  How to handle volatile markets is no exception.

Below are videos I prepared on thoughts of what to do in bear markets.  Some highlights include:

  • Can we predict what happens to the market in the short run?
  • How to take advantage of downturns with strategic re-balances to potentially reduce capital gains tax.
  • How Roth Conversions could make more sense when prices are down.
  • How often should we expect down markets?
  • The biggest mistakes investors make in downturns and how their behavior impacts their investment returns
  • How often are the “experts” right about upcoming market returns and interest rates?
  • How is your personal financial plan affected by market volatility?
  • How can retirees maintain their cash flow during market downturns without derailing their overall retirement plan?

But Jeremy, do I have to watch all of those videos and understand how each concept applies to me?

Yes, or you can seek guidance from someone who knows who already knows these concepts and how they affect you and your situation.

On the lighter side, Elliott was a little frustrated about the upcoming school week. He has a lot of tests. I mentioned the Serenity Prayer. He seemed to get it and relaxed at least for now.  Great principles may be timeless, but learning takes time.  Life will give us the same problem to repeat until the lesson is learned — until we become wise.

Hope all is well with you and your family,

Jeremy
